For quite some time, I have been curious with the make of the chisel type toe shape. I viewed several related videos on it and, soon after pulled the trigger and got and received my very first Yearns Double Monk Strap or Model No. MON.735 on 14 January 2026.
As often as I could with new leather shoes, especially hand- or Goodyear welted pairs, I initially wear them at home with the intention of ‘breaking them in’. It seems that the shape of the monks (with the Y07 last) is quite a good fit...to good, I think as there seems to be some pinching at the top, more on the right shoe than the left one, where it bends at the toes joints. According to chart I saw, this joint may be the part called METATARSOPHALANGEAL joint.
Some notable notes:
- Great leather with even brown shade except for the darker heel and toe patina/not a single blemish or imperfection.
- Conformity of the sloping vamp on the bridges of my feet.
- The hand-welting is superb and surprisingly flexible compared with Goodyear welted shoes tend to lean a bit stiffer on initial wear
- There’s a comfortable snugness at the heel cap/counter and quarter area which could be owed to the narrow waist
- Adequately tight waist and nice beveled handwork
- The shoe quarter, if this is the part near the ankles are/is low enough that it doesn’t hit or rub on the ankle bone but doesn’t give the feeling the shoe would pop off while walking
Other impressive points:
- Sturdy box with a silky exterior feel in rich hunter green and debossed logo in gold
- The classy wrapping cloth with a leather sewn in logo and shoe bags in a herring bone tweed material
- A company postcard sized note…personalized, unexpected and quite noble
- It is very rare to get shoe trees that are made based on the lasts and I ordered Yearn’s which are spectacularly perfect. Made from beechwood, they maintain the shape of the shoes and gives the leather a pleasant woody-leathery scent. Definitely a must-have…if you care enough for your hand-crafted shoes.
And lastly, I would be remiss if I didn’t share my thoughts, and appreciation, on the coordination of my order. From my first email of inquiries, consultations, curiosities, and the like, until acquiring the shoes, I have only received timely and exemplary replies from Yearn craftsman, Zhoukui Xie, with a sense of personalized attention.
Whether this is a company job requirement or personal initiative, I believe this is a proactivity that can favorably contribute to the achievement of the primary objective of Yearn Shoemaker as well as immensely contribute to a clients’ deeper appreciation of the final product.
